Flyers score late to down Caps

Feb 22, 2015 - 10:35 PM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Michael Del Zotto scored the winning goal with 4:13 to play as the Philadelphia Flyers grabbed a 3-2 win over the Washington Capitals on Sunday.

Claude Giroux posted a goal and an assist and Wayne Simmonds also scored for the Flyers, who have won their past two games. Rob Zepp turned aside 21 shots to win for the second time in two days.

Philadelphia still sits on the outside of the playoff race in the Eastern Conference, but has garnered at least a point in 12 of its last 13 games to get back into the picture.

"To be honest with you I think our players have focused on game-to-game," said Philadelphia head coach Craig Berube. "We wanted them to. I truly believe that."

Joel Ward and Tom Wilson lit the lamp for the Capitals, who had a four-game winning streak snapped. Braden Holtby allowed all three goals on 28 shots in the loss.

The game-winning goal came after Jakub Voracek worked the puck along the right boards and sent a pass over to the left wing where a flying Del Zotto wristed it into the right corner of the net.

Washington spent the last 58 seconds on the power play and with Holtby on the bench for a 6-on-4, but the Flyers were able to hold their opponents shotless to hang on for the win.

Giroux notched a power-play marker 4:39 into the game on a shot from the left circle, snapping an 11-game goal drought.

It was 2-0 for the Flyers with another power-play score, as a left circle faceoff win saw Mark Streit throw the puck on net and Simmonds knock the rebound in out of the air for his 24th of the season at 1:34 of the second.

"We just weren't sharp and they forced us not to be sharp," said Washington head coach Barry Trotz. "You have to be really prepared for that and we fell and dug ourselves a 2-0 hole."

Washington, though, scored the next two goals to tie the game, and got the first at 5:23 as John Carlson sent a pass from the right wing to the left where Wilson one-timed it home for his third on the season.

The tying goal came at 15:22 of the second when Ward's turnaround slap shot from the left circle beat Zepp high for his 14th of the season.
