Avs overcome Stars in SO

Feb 28, 2015 - 4:52 AM Dallas, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan O'Reilly scored the lone goal of the shootout and Semyon Varlamov stopped all three shooters as the Colorado Avalanche rallied for a 5-4 win over the Dallas Stars on Friday.

O'Reilly, Colorado's first shooter, skated down the right side, cut toward the slot and lifted a backhander over Kari Lehtonen's glove. Varlamov denied Jason Spezza, Jamie Benn and Vernon Fiddler to seal the win.

Tyson Barrie and Nate Guenin each tallied a goal and two assists, Gabriel Landeskog supplied a goal and a helper and Jarome Iginla also lit the lamp for the Avalanche, who have won three of their last four games.

"We were certainly not happy after 40 minutes of play," Colorado head coach Patrick Roy said. "We played better in the third period. That's the hockey that we are capable of."

Varlamov made 32 saves in his 17th straight start.

Cody Eakin finished with two goals and an assist, Antoine Roussel and Spezza each scored and Lehtonen stopped 19 shots in the Stars' fifth consecutive loss.

"It's a tough one," said Eakin. "We didn't finish the way we wanted to."

With 8:58 to play, Roussel raced into the offensive zone on the breakaway and fired a low wrister that trickled off Varlamov's pad and into the net for a 4-3 game.

The Avalanche, however, promptly responded. Barrie drifted across the blue line and fired a shot, which was redirected by Landeskog in front and hit off the post into the net for a tied game with 6:43 remaining.

John Klingberg had the best chance of the extra session as the Stars defender drove around the net and drew Varlamov out of position, but missed the net with a high shot.

After a scoreless first period, Eakin's blast from the slot started the scoring just 2:45 into the middle stanza.

Barrie tied the game with a rising shot past Lehtonen's glove midway through the second.

Dallas, however, reclaimed its lead 29 seconds later after Trevor Daley slipped a pass to Erik Cole in front. Cole was stopped in tight, but Spezza was there to knock the rebound into the net.

Eakin gave the Stars a 3-1 lead 3:45 into the final frame as his well-placed wrister beat Varlamov's glove.

Iginla cut across the goalmouth and deflected Guenin's shot into the net at 5:43 to pull Colorado within a goal once again.

Just 1:15 later, Guenin wristed a shot from bottom of the left circle that barely crossed the goal line after Lehtonen flew across his crease to hold the post. The play was reviewed and it was ruled to be a good goal.
