Price, Canadiens stifle Maple Leafs for 4th straight win

Mar 1, 2015 - 3:39 AM Montreal, QC (SportsNetwork.com) - Carey Price turned in another solid performance between the pipes as he posted his sixth shutout of the season in the Montreal Canadiens' 4-0 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday.

Price made 30 saves and improved to 10-0-1 over his last 11 starts, last losing in regulation on Feb. 3 against Buffalo. He leads the NHL with 36 wins.

David Desharnais scored twice, while Manny Malhotra and Tomas Plekanec and also lit the lamp in Montreal's fourth straight win.

Jonathan Bernier allowed three goals on 22 shots for the Maple Leafs, who had their two-game winning streak came to an end.

Malhotra opened the scoring five minutes into the game as he took a drop pass from Dale Weise and wristed a shot past Bernier's blocker for his first goal of the season.

"He works hard, does many things well and it finally paid off for him," Montreal head coach Michel Therrien said of Malhotra.

Plekanec increased Montreal's lead to 2-0 with a shot from the left circle on a delayed penalty with 7:03 left in the first period.

After a scoreless middle stanza, Desharnais struck just 1:02 into the third. Brendan Gallagher battled in front and after a scrum ensued, Desharnais took the loose puck and knocked it in from the side of the net.

"Personally, it was one of the worst calls on the third goal," said Bernier. "Gallagher just pushed me in and the goal was good. It's really frustrating."

Desharnais scored on an empty to account for the final score with 2:32 to play.

Price stopped 11 shots in both the first and second periods and then made eight more saves during the final stanza to notch his 31st career shutout.

Game Notes

The Canadiens have won five straight games against the Maple Leafs ... Malhotra's goal was his first since April 13, 2014 ... Desharnais registered his 200th career point ... Montreal is now 26-2-3 when scoring first this season ... Canadiens veteran defenseman Sergei Gonchar returned to the lineup after missing six games with an upper-body injury ... The two teams will conclude the season series on April 11 in Toronto.
