Wily Ducks feast on placid Coyotes
Mar 4, 2015 - 6:20 AM Glendale, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrew Cogliano scored twice and Jakob Silfverberg added a goal and two assists as Anaheim subdued Arizona by a 4-1 count on Tuesday.Ryan Kesler added the other marker for the Ducks, who have won three in a row and six of seven. Frederik Andersen backed up that effort with 29 saves.
"This is the team that has to do it. We look good on paper, but we have to put it down. Tonight was a good first step," Silfverberg said.
Tobias Rieder tallied for the Coyotes, whose first game since dealing defenseman Keith Yandle to the Rangers resulted in their 10th consecutive loss. Mike Smith stopped 31 shots.
"It has been a little different with the new guys in the room, but we'll try to do our best and finish the season strong," said Rieder.
Silfverberg provided his team some insurance thanks to a fluke with 7:21 played in the third.
His initial shot beat Smith but clanged off the right post, kicked back out into the slot where he gloved it down and slid it home before Smith could react properly for a 3-1 Ducks edge.
Smith was on the bench and the Coyotes went to the power play after Corey Perry was sent off for boarding with 3:35 on the clock, but Cogliano sealed the outcome on an empty-netter with 2:34 to play.
Kesler opened the scoring with Anaheim's first short-handed tally of the evening, at 13:34 of the first period. He shook off Coyotes forward Sam Gagner and potted his 17th of the season.
It was 2-0 just shy of the six-minute mark of the second when Cogliano tipped in a Simon Despres offering, but Rieder countered for the hosts' only meaningful offense at 9:30 on a backhander from the right circle.
Game Notes
Andersen (50-13-5) became the fastest goaltender in NHL history to win 50 career games since Bill Durnan in December of 1944 ... New Ducks trade- deadline acquisitions forward Tomas Fleischmann and defenseman Despres each picked up their first points as members of the franchise.
