Wings hope to extend win streak vs. Flames

Mar 6, 2015 - 4:00 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Detroit Red Wings take aim at a fourth straight victory on Friday evening as they welcome the Calgary Flames to Joe Louis Arena.

The Red Wings returned home following a 4-1-1 road trip to best the New York Rangers 2-1 in overtime on Wednesday. Recent addition Marek Zidlicky played the hero, scoring 1:09 into the extra frame just two days after being acquired from the New Jersey Devils.

Henrik Zetterberg, who returned from a four-game absence due to a head injury, sent a short pass from the right circle to the front of the net for Pavel Datsyuk, who turned around and tried to jam the puck in.

Rangers goaltender Cam Talbot made the stop, but the puck sat in the slot and Zidlicky was able to take a swipe at it, with the puck bouncing over Talbot and in for the victory.

"I just saw the puck there and I tried to hit the puck and I hit probably this back and in," said Zidlicky. "Couldn't be a better feeling. You know, it was first game. It couldn't be better feeling, and to score, especially in overtime."

Zetterberg also assisted on Justin Abdelkader's goal and Jimmy Howard made 39 saves for the Red Wings, who own an 11-point edge for third place in the Atlantic Division.

Howard should draw in against the Flames tonight and is 8-5-0 versus them lifetime with a 2.69 goals against average and .899 save percentage in 13 games.

Howard did not face the Flames in the first of two meetings this season, a 3-2 victory for Detroit in Calgary on Jan. 7. Petr Mrazek made 28 saves and both Zetterberg and Abdelkader had a goal and an assist in the Red Wings' third straight win over the Flames.

Detroit has won four of the past six encounters at home in this series.

Both Karri Ramo and Jonas Hiller saw action in net during the home loss to the Red Wings, with Ramo exiting in the second period following a collision with a teammate while coming out to play the puck.

Hiller figures to start this rematch as Ramo was in action last night in a 4-3 shootout victory in Boston. Hiller is 5-8-1 lifetime versus Detroit with a 2.56 GAA, .916 save percentage and two shutouts in 15 meetings (12 starts). It would be his first start since Feb. 20.

Ramo made 34 saves versus the Bruins and David Schlemko had the deciding goal in the eighth round of the shootout in his Flames debut. The victory has Calgary tied with the Los Angeles Kings for third place in the Pacific Division, two points back of Vancouver.

Schlemko, claimed off waivers last week from Dallas, beat Boston goaltender Tuukka Rask by deking to the backhand before tucking the puck inside the right post.

"I just went out there and tried my move and it worked," said Schlemko. "Maybe it was little risky if we had to score to tie it, but I thought I might as well go for it."

Johnny Gaudreau broke a 2-2 tie with a power-play goal 4:59 into the third period to give the Flames their first lead. Jiri Hudler recorded a goal and assisted on Sean Monahan's power-play tally late in the first period for Calgary, which is 3-2-0 on a seven-game road trip that ends on Sunday in Ottawa.

Monahan's goal was his 23rd of the season, surpassing the 22 he scored in 75 games as a rookie last season.
