Hudler, Flames scorch Red Wings
Mar 7, 2015 - 4:38 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Jiri Hudler finished with two goals, including the go-ahead marker, against his former team to lift the Calgary Flames to a 5-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Friday.Sean Monahan scored for a third consecutive game and also tallied an assist, while Matt Stajan and Mason Raymond also lit the lamp for the Flames, who were coming off a thrilling 4-3 shootout win over Boston on Thursday.
"I thought our goaltending was great again tonight," said Hudler. "It's a great win, they have a great team."
Jonas Hiller made 33 saves in Calgary's third straight win.
Justin Abdelkader tallied twice and Jimmy Howard allowed four goals on 23 shots as Detroit's three-game win streak came to an end.
"The bottom line is we leave here disappointed because we didn't do our job," Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock said.
In the second period, Brandon Bollig dumped the puck in from center ice and Stajan one-timed it off a bounce from the end boards for a 2-2 tie at 6:03.
Hudler, who played in 409 games with the Red Wings over seven seasons, gave the Flames a 3-2 edge after he moved in from the right circle and wristed a shot over Howard's pad with 6:50 to play in the second.
Just 1:50 into the final stanza, Drew Shore worked the puck off the boards and dished it to Raymond, who fired a shot from the left circle that bounced over the Howard's glove to give Calgary a two-goal lead.
Mikael Backlund nearly scored a short-handed goal with under four minutes to play as his shot from the right side fluttered on the goal line before Howard swiped it away.
Howard was pulled with over three minutes to play, but Hudler scored on the vacated cage with 1:06 remaining.
Detroit opened the scoring 3:05 into the game as Henrik Zetterberg sent a pass from his own zone through the neutral zone to Abdelkader, who skated in on a breakaway and wristed a shot past the glove of Hiller.
Five minutes later, Zetterberg skated in on net from the right side and slipped the puck through the crease to Abdelkader, who wristed it in for a power-play goal and a 2-0 score.
Monahan cut the deficit in half on a man advantage after patiently gathering a rebound, drawing Howard out of his crease and sending a low shot past two Detroit defenders midway through the first period.
