Senators top Flames in SO

Mar 9, 2015 - 5:42 AM Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Erik Karlsson scored the winning goal in the sixth round of the shootout as the Ottawa Senators escaped with a 5-4 win over the Calgary Flames on Sunday.

The Senators took a 4-0 lead into the third period, but the Flames lit the lamp four times in the frame to force overtime, with the game eventually going to the shootout.

"I don't think we played our best hockey for any part of the 60 minutes, even though we got a 4-0 lead," Karlsson said.

In the sixth round, Karlsson snapped in a heavy wrister past the glove of Jonas Hiller, who relieved Karri Ramo in the second period. Craig Anderson then sealed the victory by stopping Josh Jooris' backhand lift attempt.

Alex Chiasson, Mark Borowiecki, Mike Hoffman and Milan Michalek each had a goal for the Senators, who have won eight of their last nine games. Anderson turned aside 42 shots in the win.

Kris Russell had two goals while Joe Colborne and Mikael Backlund also scored for the Flames, who went 4-2-1 on a seven-game road trip. Ramo allowed four goals on 23 shots and Hiller turned aside all 19 he faced in relief.

"We're still missing a point. But at the same time, looking at our situation, we leave with a point here," Flames coach Bob Hartley said.

Down 4-0 at the start of the third, Calgary got one back at 6:56 when Colborne one-timed a shot home from the high slot on the rush.

It was a 4-2 game when Russell's shot from the left point was deflected in at 11:28 on the power play and, just 59 seconds later, Backlund lifted the puck over Anderson from the right side.

The Flames then tied the game with 2:18 to play as Johnny Gaudreau skated down the left wing and passed it to the front where Russell wristed it over the glove of Anderson.

Ottawa opened the scoring at 12:14 of the first when Chiasson snapped home a rebound from the right side.

The Senators scored with just 7.1 seconds left in the opening frame as Michalek snapped home a feed at the right side of the net for a 2-0 lead.

Ottawa took a 3-0 lead 2:34 into the second period after Borowiecki's big blast from the high slot was tipped on its way into the net.

It was a 4-0 lead for Ottawa at 7:10 of the second as Hoffman's snap shot from the right circle beat Ramo high.
