Rolling Sens take on Maple Leafs

Mar 21, 2015 - 3:13 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrew Hammond had a historic run come to end the last time out, but he still helped the Ottawa Senators pick up a big win.

The goaltender better known as the "Hamburglar" will try to lead the Senators to a sixth straight victory when they host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday.

Hammond improved to 12-0-1 on his career after making 31 saves in Thursday's crucial 6-4 win over the visiting Boston Bruins. However, it did mark the first time Hammond allowed more than two goals in a start, ending his NHL record-tying run at 12 games. Hammond was tied with Hall of Famer Frank Brimsek, who set the record for longest stretch of starts yielding fewer than three goals to begin an NHL career back in 1938-39.

"I expected to let in four goals at some point in my NHL career, or five or six," Hammond said. "Every night you just try to find a way to give your team a chance.

Fueled by the 27-year-old netminder's amazing run, the Senators are 13-1-1 over their last 15 trips to the ice and have pulled within two points of the Bruins for the last wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. Ottawa has one game in hand over Boston, which visits Florida on Saturday.

Kyle Turris finished with two goals and one assist to help the Sens win a wild one against Boston. The clubs were tied at 4-4 after 40 minutes, but Bobby Ryan delivered the game-winner with 8:32 remaining in the third period. Turris added an empty-netter in the closing minute to seal the big win for the home team.

Milan Michalek added a goal and two assists for the Senators, who have won five in a row to match a season high. Ottawa hasn't won six consecutive tests since Oct. 20-30, 2011.

Ryan's goal was the 200th of his NHL career, while David Legwand and Jean- Gabriel Pageau also lit the lamp in the victory.

Hammond is likely to get a sixth straight start in net tonight. He has never faced the Maple Leafs.

Ottawa is playing the second test of a four-game homestand this evening and is 18-11-5 as the host this season.

Tonight's test marks only the second of five meetings between the Leafs and Sens this season. Ottawa has claimed two of the past three in the series overall and at home.

Toronto is ahead of only Buffalo in the East standings and the club enters Saturday having lost four straight -- all in regulation. The Maple Leafs have lost each of their past three tilts by identical 4-1 scores.

The latest setback came Thursday against visiting San Jose, which outshot the Leafs by a 42-28 margin. The Sharks held a 21-8 shot advantage in the opening period.

The Maple Leafs received 38 saves from Jonathan Bernier and Jake Gardiner scored their only goal.

"We're probably a junior team against an NHL team tonight," Bernier said.

James Reimer will get the start in net for Toronto on Saturday. He is 10-3-1 with a 2.19 goals against average in 15 career outings versus the Senators.
