Flames hold off Avalanche

Mar 24, 2015 - 5:49 AM Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Lance Bouma and David Jones each tallied a goal and an assist as the Calgary Flames topped the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 on Monday.

Jiri Hudler also scored and Karri Ramo made 25 saves for the Flames, who bounced back from an overtime loss to Columbus on Saturday and maintained their hold on the third spot in the Pacific Division.

Gabriel Landeskog supplied a goal and an assist, Alex Tanguay lit the lamp and Semyon Varlamov allowed all three goals on 26 shots in Colorado's second straight loss on the heels of a three-game winning streak.

"We had a lot of good chances, but just couldn't score any goals to tie the game," Avs coach Patrick Roy said. "They defend well. They block a lot of shots. They did a really good job winning the faceoff."

In the third period, Bouma made it a 3-1 game with a slick redirection at 8:40, but the Avalanche got within one yet again on Landeskog's sharp- angle shot from the left side just over two minutes later.

Varlamov was pulled with just under two minutes to play, but Colorado was unable to force an extra session.

"I thought that the third period was by far a very well played period," Flames coach Bob Hartley said.

Jones opened the scoring for the Flames 6:18 into the game by taking Bouma's cross-ice pass and wristing a shot into the back of the night to finish off a 2-on-1.

Tanguay's wrister from the slot tied the game with 2:14 left in the first period, but Hudler restored Calgary's lead on a deflection in front with 16 seconds to play in the stanza.

John Mitchell came close to tying the game 7:30 into the middle frame, but his one-timer hit iron.
