Hurricanes score 2 in 3rd to beat Devils

Mar 29, 2015 - 2:35 AM Raleigh, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Eric Staal and Justin Faulk scored in the third period to lift the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-1 win over the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night.

Cam Ward made eight saves in the third and finished with 21 as Carolina won its second straight game after dropping four in a row.

"We got better as the game went on," said Staal.

Keith Kinkaid stopped 29 shots for the Devils, who have lost their last four games.

Staal banged in a rebound nine seconds in to break a 1-1 tie and Faulk scored on a slap shot from just inside the blue line at the 4:58 mark.

"We just couldn't dig our way out of it," said Devils president and general manager Lou Lamoriello.

The Devils had a goal disallowed 8:48 into the game because Scott Gomez clearly batted the puck into the net with his stick above the crossbar.

Less than three minutes after the high stick negated the goal, New Jersey converted on a power play to grab a 1-0 lead. Mike Cammalleri knocked down Ron Hainsey's clearing attempt and got the puck to Patrik Elias for a redirection in front of Ward at 11:03.

Carolina tied it with 1:27 left in the second period when Chris Terry went top shelf from a sharp angle off a feed from Jeff Skinner.
