Jackets rally to match franchise-best win streak
Apr 3, 2015 - 3:01 AM Columbus, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - The Columbus Blue Jackets are not headed to the playoffs, but they continue to rack up the wins.Mark Letestu and Ryan Johansen scored in the shootout, and the Blue Jackets matched a franchise record with an eighth consecutive victory by rallying to beat the New York Islanders 4-3 on Thursday night.
Johansen's goal with 3:43 left in regulation completed Columbus' rally from a 3-1 third-period deficit.
Jack Johnson scored in a third straight game for the Blue Jackets, whose eight-game run equals the team record set Jan. 6-23, 2014.
"Guys stuck with it, and we got some momentum from Jack's goal. Found some energy and got the tying goal," said Columbus' Todd Richards, who picked up his 200th win as an NHL head coach.
Sergei Bobrovsky made 25 saves and turned aside both New York shooters in the tiebreaker.
John Tavares scored his 35th goal of the season and added an assist for the Islanders, who have dropped eight of their last 10 games and are tied with Washington for second place in the Metropolitan Division.
Jaroslav Halak stopped 36 Columbus shots, including seven in overtime.
Johnson, who was sent home after not feeling well at the morning skate, pounced on a loose puck during a scrum around the crease and snapped a shot past Halak to draw Columbus within 3-2 at 11:08 of the third.
Johansen tied it when he poked in a puck that sat behind Halak in the crease.
"They did a great job of getting (point) shots to the net, and that's how they scored three goals," said Islanders coach Jack Capuano.
The Blue Jackets killed a penalty over the final two minutes to force overtime, then couldn't take advantage of an early man advantage in overtime.
Reinserted into the lineup after being a healthy scratch the past 11 games, Eric Boulton staked the Islanders to an early lead, sweeping his own rebound under Bobrovsky 2:54 into the contest. It was Boulton's first goal since Dec. 12, 2013.
The Blue Jackets tied it at 7:06 of the first period on a goal from Brandon Dubinsky. After moving the puck to Dalton Prout at the point, Dubinsky went to the net and had Prout's shot deflect in off his leg.
Tavares gave New York a 2-1 lead 2:03 into the second period. Defenseman Nick Leddy was down low behind the Columbus net and sent a pass off the boards to Johnny Boychuk, whose blast from the point was tipped in the slot by Tavares.
Continuing the theme of early goals in periods, Ryan Strome extended the Islanders' lead 55 seconds into the third. Tavares carried the puck across the Columbus blue line, pulled up in the right circle and dished to a trailing Travis Hamonic at the point. Bobrovsky made a save on Hamonic's one-timer, but Strome buried the rebound past the Blue Jackets goalie.
Game Notes
Johansen has four goals and eight assists during a nine-game point streak ... Columbus was 0-for-2 on the power play. The Islanders have gone 10 straight road games without allowing a power-play goal ... Leddy had two assists.
