Kings score 3 goals on Talbot in 96 seconds, beat Oilers 5-2

Dec 30, 2015 - 6:47 AM EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) It took the Los Angeles Kings just more than a minute and a half to do all the damage they needed.

Dustin Brown and Trevor Lewis each had a goal and two assists as Los Angeles scored three times in 96 seconds Tuesday night during a 5-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers.

Dwight King, Michael Mersch and Tyler Toffoli also scored for the Kings, who have won three straight. Jonathan Quick made 42 saves and improved to 17-1-5 in his career against the Oilers.

''It's a good win for our team. It's tough playing back-to-back coming in,'' Kings coach Darryl Sutter said. ''Jonathan is a great goalie and most nights he gives you a chance to win. He's an important player for us.''

King also had an assist in his first game this season after missing 35 due to a broken foot.

''It's been a long process to get back and the boys have been doing really well without me, so to come back to a win is a good feeling,'' he said.

Benoit Pouliot and Mark Letestu scored for the Oilers, who had won seven consecutive home games. Edmonton dropped its third in a row overall.

''Things were going pretty well for us, we were doing a lot of things we wanted to do against a real good team,'' coach Todd McLellan said. ''And in a matter of a minute and a half, the bottom falls out on us for a number of reasons. That was disappointing.''

The Kings snapped a scoreless tie 4:22 into the second period after some soft play behind the net by Justin Schultz allowed King, playing his first game of the season, to emerge from behind the goal line and sneak a bad-angle shot past Cam Talbot.

''He's got to have it. There's no other way of putting it,'' McLellan said.

That opened the floodgates, and the Kings quickly made it 3-0 with goals 16 seconds apart.

Just more than a minute after King scored, Mersch swung out behind the net and scored his first NHL goal. Seconds later, Toffoli beat Talbot over the shoulder, prompting the Oilers to replace him in net with Anders Nilsson.

Edmonton got one back midway through the second as Pouliot scored his third goal in the last two games, beating Quick with a wrist shot.

Los Angeles made it 4-1 with 6 minutes left in the second as Lewis converted on a nice feed from Brown.

The Oilers scored 2 minutes into the third when Lauri Korpikoski sent a backhand feed in front to Letestu for the goal.

Brown scored his fourth of the season on the power play with 8 minutes to play.

NOTES: Kings forward Anze Kopitar entered with a plus-31 rating in his career against Edmonton. ... Out with injuries for Los Angeles were Jeff Carter (upper body), Matt Greene (shoulder) and Kyle Clifford (upper body). ... Absent from the Oilers' lineup were Connor McDavid (collarbone), Rob Klinkhammer (ankle), Nail Yakupov (ankle), Brandon Davidson (ribs), Oscar Klefbom (finger) and Andrew Ference (undisclosed). ... Both teams return to action Thursday. The Oilers continue a six-game homestand against Anaheim, and the Kings travel to Calgary to face the Flames.
