Islanders eye return of C Bates

Nov 27, 2007 - 11:54 PM UNIONDALE, New York (Ticker) -- The New York Islanders may get an added boost to their lineup.

Shawn Bates, who has been sidelined with both a sports hernia and groin injury for the past 10 months, is expected to return for Wednesday's game against the Ottawa Senators.

The 32-year-old Bates centered a line with Richard Park and Sean Bergenheim in practice on Tuesday.

"Shawn has worked extremely hard on his conditioning and spent a few games down in Bridgeport," Islanders coach Ted Nolan said. "So we'll probably more than likely see him tomorrow night."

Bates suffered an abdominal injury in practice on January 29, played in a game the next day and scored a goal. In that game, Bates aggravated the injury and has not played since.

Bates has 72 goals, 126 assists and 266 penalty minutes in 463 career games.
