Friday's Sports In Brief
May 7, 2016 - 6:58 AM LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) HORSE RACINGCathryn Sophia took charge entering the stretch and rolled to victory Friday in the 142nd Kentucky Oaks Friday at Churchill Downs.
After running third last month in the Ashland at Keeneland, she got a good start along with favorite Rachel's Valentina and stayed in the mix in the $1 million showcase for 3-year-old fillies. Cathryn Sophia found her opening at the top of the stretch, overtook the fading Lewis Bay and pulled away in the final furlong to win by 2 3/4 lengths over Land Over Sea.
Cathryn Sophia claimed her first Grade 1 victory and gave trainer John Servis and Javier Castellano their first victories in the Oaks. She ran 1 1/8 miles in 1:50.53 and paid $11.40, $5.40 and $3.80 for her fifth win in six starts.
Land Over Sea returned $6.60 and $5.20, and Lewis Bay paid $4.60 for show.
NHL
NEW YORK (AP) - Jason Garrison scored 1:34 into overtime to give the Tampa Bay Lightning a 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders on Friday night and a 3-1 series lead.
Garrison took a pass from Andrej Sustr and fired a slap shot from the right faceoff circle past goalie Thomas Greiss to give the Lightning their second straight overtime win and move them one win away from reaching the conference finals for the second straight year.
Nikita Kucherov scored his NHL-leading eighth of the playoffs for Tampa Bay, and Ben Bishop made 27 saves.
Kucherov, who tied the score with 38.4 seconds left in regulation in Game 3 on Tuesday night, evened this one at 7:49 of the third. He took a pass from Tyler Johnson and fired a slap shot from the left faceoff dot past Greiss' blocker.
Kyle Okposo scored early in the first period for the Islanders, and Greiss stopped 20 shots.
Game 5 of this best-of-seven series is Sunday in Tampa, Florida.
NBA
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Kawhi Leonard had 31 points and 11 rebounds, and the San Antonio Spurs beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 100-96 on Friday night to take a 2-1 lead in the Western Conference semifinal series.
LaMarcus Aldridge had 24 points and eight rebounds, and Tony Parker added 19 points and eight rebounds for the Spurs, who regained the home-court advantage they had surrendered with a loss in Game 2.
Russell Westbrook scored 31 points for the Thunder, but he made just 10 of 31 shots. He also had nine rebounds and eight assists. Kevin Durant scored 26 points, Serge Ibaka added 15 and Steven Adams had 11 rebounds for Oklahoma City.
The Thunder shot just 41.5 percent from the field.
Game 4 will be Sunday in Oklahoma City.
ATLANTA (AP) - Channing Frye scored a career playoff-high 27 points and the Cleveland Cavaliers kept up their 3-point barrage Friday night, pulling away in the closing minutes for a 121-108 victory over the Atlanta Hawks and a commanding 3-0 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Two nights after setting an NBA record with 25 baskets beyond the arc, the Cavaliers were nearly as good in a 21-of-39 performance from long range that moved them within one victory of their second playoff sweep over the Hawks in two years.
Atlanta turned in a much more respectable showing after getting blown out in Game 2. But in the end, it was the same result for a team that has lost 10 straight to the Cavaliers going back to last year's conference final.
Game 4 is Sunday in Atlanta.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The Utah Jazz have extended coach Quin Snyder's contract.
The team announced a long-term extension Friday morning, but did not release other details of the deal.
The 2016-17 season would have been the third year of the initial three-year deal Snyder signed when he was hired. The team has gone 78-86 in two years under Snyder and narrowly missed the playoffs this season.
General manager Dennis Lindsey knew Snyder well from working with him in the Spurs organization, but the best reference came from Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski. Snyder played at Duke and was an assistant coach there as well.
Snyder is considered one of the bright, young minds in the game with a knack for developing players. The Jazz allowed just 95.4 points per game the last two seasons, the second-fewest in the league despite a roster that was ravaged by injuries in 2015-16.
BASEBALL
NEW YORK (AP) - Just after his best outing this season, CC Sabathia was put on the 15-day disabled list by the New York Yankees on Friday because of a strained left groin.
The 35-year-old left-hander allowed six hits in seven shutout innings at Baltimore on Wednesday and struck out six, stopping the Yankees' six-game losing streak. It was just the second scoreless outing since April 2013 for Sabathia, who is 2-2 with a 3.81 ERA five starts this season.
Last-place New York is 10-17, its worst start since 1991. Before Wednesday's game, designated hitter Alex Rodriguez went on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring.
No one has shouted yet.
