Jets GM Cheveldayoff, Maurice receive contract extensions

Sep 7, 2017 - 2:08 PM The Winnipeg Jets reached multi-year contract extensions with both general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff and head coach Paul Maurice, the team announced Thursday.

Specific terms of the deals were not disclosed by the club, although TSN's Darren Dreger reported Cheveldayoff signed months ago and Maurice agreed to his deal more recently.

Cheveldayoff has served as general manager of the franchise since 2011, when the Atlanta Thrashers relocated to Winnipeg. The Jets own a 216-191-51 mark under Cheveldayoff, who spent two years as the Chicago Blackhawks' assistant general manager before joining Winnipeg.

Maurice, who replaced the fired Claude Noel during the 2013-14 season, has posted a 136-112-33 record with the Jets.

The 50-year-old also has had coaching stints with Hartford/Carolina and Toronto. He is currently 11th on the NHL's all-time list with 1,365 games coached and needs only 22 more to pass Mike Keenan to move into the top 10.

"From the very first conversation that I had with Kevin a couple of days before I took the job (in 2014), every part of his plan was laid out and that included me being a part of this organization. I'm really pleased to be able to do that going forward," Maurice told the team's website.

"We're excited about how it's unfolded, the direction we're going in, and we're excited about being a part of it."

Winnipeg finished last season with a 40-35-7 record, nine points out of the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference.
