Boyle caps comeback in OT as Lightning edge Capitals

Sep 21, 2006 - 2:15 AM WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The Washington Capitals got off to a good start, but the Tampa Bay Lightning had a better finish.

Defenseman Dan Boyle capped a comeback with a power-play goal midway through overtime as the Lightning rallied for a 3-2 preseason victory over the Capitals.

Russian prospect Alexander Semin opened the scoring at 2:20 of the first period and Matt Pettinger tallied halfway through the middle session, giving Washington a 2-0 lead. But it lasted less than three minutes as Norm Milley scored with 5:15 to go in the period to halve the deficit for Tampa Bay.

Vincent Lecavalier converted a power-play opportunity at 10:40 of the third to forge a tie before setting up Boyle for the game-winner during a man advantage at 2:24 of overtime.

Acquired from Columbus during the offseason, Marc Denis had a strong debut for Tampa Bay, making 40 saves - including 18 in the second period.

Former Vezina Trophy winner Olaf Kolzig stopped 33 shots for the Capitals, while reigning Calder Trophy recipient Alexander Ovechkin recorded seven shots but was held scoreless.

Martin St. Louis and Brad Richards did not play for the Lightning.
