Alfredsson leaves game as Senators fall to Maple Leafs

Sep 21, 2006 - 2:48 AM OTTAWA (Ticker) -- The Ottawa Senators lost their captain, then lost the game against their provincial rivals.

Daniel Alfredsson left with a groin injury in the second period before defensemen Brad Brown and Andrew Wozniewski scored in the third to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 3-1 preseason win over the Senators.

Things got off to a good start for the Senators as Mike Fisher scored at 4:21 of the middle session and newcomer Martin Gerber stopped all 13 shots he faced. However, the good feelings quickly went sour as Alfredsson exited with a groin ailment later in the period.

Bates Battaglia drew Toronto even with 7:56 to go in the second and Brown put the Maple Leafs ahead for good less than five minutes into the third. Wozniewski added insurance at 9:34, converting a pass from Michael Peca, who also set up Brown's goal.

Mikael Tellqvist was outstanding in goal for the Maple Leafs, making 33 saves - including 12 in the final period.

Jeff O'Neill and defenseman Brendan Bell each recorded an assist for Toronto, which played without captain Mats Sundin.

Jeff Glass allowed three goals on 17 shots for the Senators, who scratched blue-liner Wade Redden and high-scoring forwards Dany Heatley and Jason Spezza.
