Nolan scores first two post-lockout goals as Coyotes win
Sep 21, 2006 - 5:30 AM GLENDALE, Arizona (Ticker) -- Owen Nolan has not played in the NHL since 2003-04. He did not show much rust Wednesday.Skating in his second preseason game since last appearing in the league prior to the lockout, Nolan scored a pair of goals as the Phoenix Coyotes registered a 3-2 victory over the Dallas Stars.
A five-time All-Star who was drafted first overall by the Quebec Nordiques in 1990, Nolan sat out the entire 2005-06 season while recovering from knee surgery. He last appeared in the league with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2003-04, when he recorded 19 goals and 29 assists in 65 games.
Nolan, who has reached the 20-goal plateau nine times in 14 seasons and topped 40 tallies twice, had a strong performance in his first home game with the Coyotes. Signed to a one-year, $1.225 million contract this summer, the 34-year-old native of Ireland gave Phoenix a 1-0 lead just 88 seconds into the game and netted his second of the night at 4:10 of the second to open a 2-1 advantage.
Defenseman Jaroslav Modry, who was acquired in an offseason deal with Atlanta, forged a 2-2 tie with a power-play goal at 8:49 of the third. But newcomer Mike Zigomanis tallied 87 seconds later to restore the lead for the Coyotes.
Steven Reinprecht recorded two assists and Curtis Joseph allowed one goal on 20 shots for Phoenix, which entered with just one tally in its previous two preseason games and is 0-for-21 on the power play in exhibition play.
Inked to a one-year, $1.55 million deal over the summer, Eric Lindros had a goal and an assist for the Stars, who rested defenseman Sergei Zubov and goaltender Marty Turco.
