Aussie skater on track for second Olympics

Feb 26, 2017 - 8:22 AM Sochi Olympian Brendan Kerry has positioned himself well to compete at a second Winter Games, performing strongly in his last figure skating competition before next month's Olympic qualifying event.

Kerry, 22, who lives and trains in Los Angeles, finished in fifth place on Sunday in the men's competition at the Asian Winter Games in Sapporo, Japan, which was won by Japanese superstar Shoma Uno.

NSW skater Kailani Craine, 18, was fifth in the ladies competition on Saturday.

They will both travel to Helsinki in March where they'll be looking to gain a top 17 ranking which will earn Australia spots at the Winter Olympics in Pyeonchang, South Korea next Year.

Kerry says he's in a "one hundred per cent better place" to compete at an Olympics than he was three years ago.

"Last time was my first time moving overseas, I had my first girlfriend, I was finishing my HSC," he told AAP.

"Now training comes first."

Kerry and Craine were among 28 Aussie athletes at the Asian Games, at which Australia competed for the first time as a guest nation.
