Rullo to become youngest V8 champs driver
Feb 8, 2017 - 2:21 AM Most teenagers are trying to obtain their learner's licence at age 16 but not Alex Rullo - he is readying to make his debut on the V8 Supercars circuit.Rullo is set to become the youngest ever Supercars driver after signing with Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport for the 2017 championship season.
The Perth local competed for LDM in last year's second-tier Dunlop Series as a 15-year-old where he finished 17th after seven races.
He will juggle creating history on the track with the responsibilities of being a year 12 student.
"Being the youngest driver in the field is going to give me such a great opportunity and enable me to learn as much as possible at a young age, which is something that I am extremely grateful for," Rullo said .
"I'm honoured to be sharing the stage with some of the best drivers in the most competitive touring car championship in the world.
"I have massive respect for all of them and look forward to using them as a benchmark."
Rullo has been mentored by the team's top driver Nick Percat, who finished 18th in last year's Supercars championship.
He said he expects his car in 2017 won't be too different to the Castrol-backed Holden VF Commodore he drove last year.
"The big challenge will be adapting to the soft tyre this year which is used in the majority of events," he said.
Team owner Lucas Dumbrell said Rullo was ready to step up into the main series.
"For a 16 year old, Alex shows a level of maturity beyond his years and applies this to all areas of racing," Dumbrell said.
The V8 Supercars season begins on March 2 with the Clipsal 500 Adelaide.
