12 drivers are still in contention to win the NASCAR Cup Series Championship as the second round of the playoffs begins this week.

However, it doesn’t appear to matter when trying to win. None of the 16 initial playoff competitors in the first round claimed a victory. I don’t necessarily believe that the 12 drivers who are eligible to win the championship this year have that much of an advantage over those who don’t now that we’ve reached the Round of 12 and added four more drivers to the mix of non-playoff drivers.

Let’s take a closer look at how things might shake out this weekend in Texas.

Best Picks for the 2022 Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 500

Top 3: Ryan Blaney | +275 at DraftKings Sportsbook

Ryan Blaney has six top 8s in his previous eight races and finished in the top 12 in all but two of his Texas starts. The two exceptions are the races in which he led 145 laps in the spring of 2019 before an engine issue and 150 laps in July 2020 before a late-race caution. It’s also worth mentioning he won the All-Star race this past spring.

Top 3: Kyle Larson | +170 at DraftKings Sportsbook

Coming to Fort Worth, Kyle Larson is in a dangerous spot as he is aiming for the victory and an automatic spot into the Round of 8. Given that Larson is our most recent Texas winner, he ought to have a strong chance of succeeding and claiming one of the eight open seats in the following round of the playoffs.

Larson will be swinging for the fences in this 500-mile shootout because he wants to make a strong impact at Texas after a lackluster first round. He has a solid chance of pulling off the surprise victory this Sunday based on his outstanding showing in this competition last year. Look for him to finish at least in the top few spots.
