Rooster Waerea-Hargreaves signs to 2020
Nov 10, 2016 - 1:10 AM Following a horror season, the Sydney Roosters have received some good news with prop Jared Waerea-Hargreaves signing on until at least the end of the 2020 NRL season. The New Zealand prop, who signed a three-year contract extension, has played 143 games for the club in seven seasons since moving from Manly in 2009.
The 27-year-old missed a big chunk of the season with a knee injury, but averaged a healthy 120 metres in 14 games as the Roosters finished second-last on the ladder with six wins.
"Everyone who knows me knows how much the Roosters mean to me," Waerea-Hargreaves, a 2013 premiership player, said in a statement.
"It's an honour to wear the Roosters jersey and to represent our area, and I consider myself incredibly fortunate to know that I'll continue to be part of the team we have here for at least the next four years."
Waerea-Hargreaves did enough to force his way into the New Zealand squad competing in the Four Nations in the UK and played his first game for the Kiwis in three years when he ran out against Australia in Perth last month.
Roosters coach Trent Robinson said Waerea-Hargreaves, the Roosters' vice-captain, is a natural leader.
"It's great to know that Jared will continue to play his role at the Roosters in the coming years," Robinson said.
The Roosters, whose year began with star halfback Mitchell Pearce's eight-week suspension after three-straight minor premierships, have recruited Luke Keary and Michael Gordon to try to turn their fortunes around in 2017.
