Hurrell injures knee, in doubt for Nines
Dec 20, 2016 - 2:12 AM Gold Coast centre Konrad Hurrell could miss next year's Auckland Nines after injuring his medial ligament at training.Hurrell was wearing a large brace on his right knee on Tuesday as his teammates completed their final field training session of the year at the Titans' new Parkwood base.
The 25-year-old, who left the Warriors midway through last season to join Gold Coast, suffered the injury during a tackle in an opposed session with the Burleigh Bears late last week.
Scans have revealed a minor tear in the ligament.
Coach Neil Henry said it was likely Hurrell would only miss three or four weeks, but couldn't guarantee his fitness for the Nines, to be played on February 4-5.
"He's just in a brace for probably two weeks, which is a bit of a setback for him, he's been training really well," Henry said.
"It'll settle down, we're just about into the Christmas break and hopefully by mid-January he's back out there."
If not, new recruit Dan Sarginson could slot straight into Hurrell's position.
The Englishman, who was in Wayne Bennett's squad for the recent Four Nations tournament, arrived on the Gold Coast last week and had settled in well, Henry said.
Sarginson was due for his first run in the centres during Tuesday's training session.
"He's glad it's an overcast day today," Henry said.
"He's been out and about, enjoying the lifestyle.
"He was keen to get here which is a credit to him, given that he had a long season and Wigan played in the grand final, and he was in that Four Nations as well representing his country.
"He was keen to get a week and a half of training in before Christmas, so he's done that."
