Titans' Elgey to move on from 2016 pain
Jan 4, 2017 - 3:43 AM A year since a devastating knee injury stalled his career, Kane Elgey has now moved on from a disastrous 2016.The Gold Coast's plans for last NRL season were thrown into disarray on January 4, 2016, when Elgey suffered a year-ending anterior cruciate ligament tear.
And the 22-year-old admitted he was nervous about returning to the Titans' pre-season training from the Christmas break on Wednesday.
"Today's a bit of a daunting day for me," Elgey said.
"It's been a tough year.
"But it's back to normal now. It's in the past and I'm ready to get back into it."
Elgey's injury eventually proved to have a silver lining for the Titans, who unearthed the NRL's rookie of the year in Ashley Taylor.
It's set up a well-publicised challenge for the two halves spots at the Titans, with regular five-eighth Tyrone Roberts battling with the young pair to retain his place.
And Elgey now hopes January 4 can represent the day he begins his surge back into the Titans' line up.
"Obviously a year out of the game is a fair while and I just want to be consistent and get back out there and hopefully get my spot back," he said
"After Christmas, training is more game-related now and it's about getting our combinations right."
The Titans junior will make his first foray into competitive football since the injury at next month's Auckland Nines, where teammate Jarryd Hayne is also a confirmed starter.
