Mbye fine for Bulldogs NRL opener
Mar 1, 2017 - 6:23 AM Canterbury halfback Moses Mbye insists he will not be hampered in the Bulldogs' NRL season opener on Friday night against Melbourne, despite reports of a serious elbow injury.Mbye injured his elbow last month in Canterbury's last trial, also against the Storm, but he denied reports on Wednesday the incident had resulted in a fracture of the bone.
"I had scans and the whole procedure and they came back all good," he said.
"There's a little bit of bruising, but there's no damage structurally to the elbow. I've been training and I'll be playing this weekend.
"If I had a broken arm, I don't think I would be playing a game of footy."
Mbye, and his halves partner Josh Reynolds, will play a key role in the Bulldogs' fate in 2016.
In their first full season together last year, the Bulldogs at times looked as if they struggled for cohesion - losing their last four games and failing to score above 20 in any of them to be knocked out in the first week of the finals.
But Mbye said he and Reynolds would benefit from another full pre-season alongside each other.
"It's about getting miles and reps," he said.
"Josh and I have had the opportunity to get together and work on our combination which we've really enjoyed."
Key to that will be be the pair receiving more ball.
The Bulldogs have typically played a forwards-first approach since the arrival in 2012 of coach Des Hasler.
And while Bulldogs players have said that won't change too much in 2017, Mbye has indicated he expects to have a little more control of the side's attack this year.
"We're a big part of the game plan," he said.
"That involves our hands on the ball a little bit more than last year.
"I don't think it came down to that (last year). We just need to execute. The more we execute, the more sets we get and the more ball we get in our hands."
