Contract talk causing friction: Sarginson
Apr 19, 2017 - 5:33 PM Gold Coast recruit Dan Sarginson cut his teeth in the English Super League, and since joining the NRL says he has noticed the downsides of mass media coverage. While the NRL's contract system is almost identical to that of the Super League, he says dressing-room issues can easily arise thanks to the high amount of media scrutiny.
"A lot more goes out into the press here, I think that puts a lot more pressure on the players during the season," Sarginson said.
"I know there has been a lot of talk about Jarryd Hayne and Chris McQueen's contracts.
"The contact talks can cause a bit of friction sometimes, because if you don't know what another player is doing it could affect your own contract.
Sarginson can expect plenty more contract talk in the next month, with Hayne still yet to invoke the second year option in his contract.
The former NFL player has until the end of May and the are not open to renegotiating his contract.
If Hayne stays on the Gold Coast he would receive $1.1 million for his second year.
The current contract system might not be the only option for players in future.
Two weeks ago NRL CEO Todd Greenberg said he was open to discussing changes which could help grow the game, flagging the possibility of a transfer window.
"I am sure TV would love to get a hold of it (like) you see draft day in the NFL," said Greenberg.
"I think there could be a bit of excitement around it - it could be good for the game."
