Coach Henry says it's all good with Hayne
Apr 28, 2017 - 1:46 AM Fed-up Gold Coast coach Neil Henry insists his relationship with NRL superstar Jarryd Hayne is fine, labelling talk of a rift between the pair as a "beat up".Reports of tension between the coach and player again surfaced even after Hayne's man-of-the-match showing in the Titans' upset win over premiers Cronulla last Saturday night.
Henry has clearly had enough.
"Again, this is a beat up from before Christmas. I don't know where it's coming from," Henry said on the eve of the Titans' hosting of Newcastle on Saturday.
"We had a beer after the game. Again it's a beat up ... we're fine."
Hayne has endured constant media scrutiny about his attitude and whether he'll remain at the Titans beyond 2017 since joining the club last August.
The code hopper found himself back in the public eye when former Queensland State of Origin player Justin Hodges told Fox Sports' Queenslanders Only program the ex-NFL player had a negative influence on the Titans.
"The thing that stands out to me is that he blows up to the refs too often, he's blowing up about his teammates," Hodges said.
"They can have a really negative vibe, especially on those young halves. Ash Taylor and those guys really look up to him and look for advice.
"You can't get advice from someone who doesn't want to be there for you and doesn't look interested at all ... that's what Haynesy needs to change."
Henry, though, said talk that Hayne wasn't a team player was rubbish.
"They're talking about him arguing on field ... as I've said before, players who want the ball will call for the ball," the coach said.
"You quite often see one half on one side putting his arms in the air and it goes the other way. That's just the nature of the game."
Gold Coast co-captain Ryan James also backed the dual Dally M Medallist, saying Hayne brings an extraordinary skill set and direction to the Titans.
"He just sees things other people don't see and he has the ability others don't," James said.
"It's great to have him back, it isn't talked about much but on the field his talk out the back just really helps the blokes in the middle of the park."
Henry reiterated Hayne had been working hard at training and would like the former NSW Origin star to sign a contract extension, keeping him at the Titans in 2018.
