Griffin to address Penrith's slow starts
May 21, 2017 - 5:30 PM His team produced yet another great escape any magician would be proud of, but Penrith coach Anthony Griffin is starting to get tired of watching the trick. For the second week in a row, the Panthers overcame a horror first half to come back from 14-0 down and steal a 30-20 win over Newcastle on Sunday.
The thrilling fightback came a week after they also scored 30 second-half points against the Warriors to complete their second biggest comeback in the club's history.
Griffin trumpeted his side's ability to climb off the canvas in their past two matches, but conceded he was at a loss to explain a concerning trend of slow starts.
Over the past five weeks, Penrith have been outscored 88-8 in the first halves of games.
"I like a lot about what we're doing at the moment - we're not lying down. At halftime again we just spoke about winning the game and how were going to win it.
"We came back to really simple things as a team, and the team pulling even tighter together than what we were in the first half, and we did that.
"In the end we did a good job. There's no easy way to win a game. We need to find a better way, but the team we got at the moment's really learning how to win."
Skipper Matt Moylan admitted it was a serious issue the team needed to address during their bye week before their next clash against Canterbury on Sunday week.
The Panthers have the next two days off and resume training on Wednesday.
"We're just getting on the back foot in the first halves over the last few weeks and having to play some good footy to get us out of it," he said.
"We've got to work on our starts, address that at training and fix that."
The Panthers will also be sweating on Monday scans for hooker Peter Wallace (groin) and five-eighth Bryce Cartwright (knee), who failed to finish the match.
