Origin star Frizell to have further scans

Jun 4, 2017 - 2:35 AM Tyson Frizell is to undergo further scans on his injured ribs on Monday as his NSW State of Origin spot hangs in the balance.

Frizell was taken to hospital for scans after he was injured attempting a tackle in St George Illawarra's 16-12 win over Wests Tigers on Saturday, amid fears of a possible fracture.

However the NSW Origin lock will undergo further tests on Monday as Dragons officials attempt to discover the exact extent of the injury.

The blow came just two-and-a-half weeks before the second Origin match at ANZ Stadium.

Frizell was a solid performer in the Blues' 28-4 series-opening win.

He made 83 metres and 30 tackles, after being a standout in his first two games for NSW last year.

It is the second time this season the 25-year-old has suffered a game-ending rib injury.

He was also taken from the field against Manly in April, but did not miss any matches.

If Frizell is ruled out, it could open the door for either of his Dragons' teammates Jack de Belin or Paul Vaughan to be brought into the NSW side.

De Belin formed part of an extended NSW squad for game one, and would be a ready-made replacement if interchange back-rowers Jake Trbojevic or Wade Graham were pushed into the starting side.

Meanwhile Vaughan has been the NRL's form prop this season, and could also be added to the bench as an extra man in the middle.

Penrith prop James Tamou was also the best forward in last month's City-Country clash and has played 14 Origins for NSW.
