Dragons keen to extend luckless Hutchison
Aug 3, 2017 - 5:31 PM St George Illawarra are keen to extend unlucky halfback Drew Hutchison beyond the end of this NRL season, according to coach Paul McGregor.McGregor confirmed Hutchison is set to make his long-awaited comeback from a knee reconstruction in reserve grade following this week's bye.
His return will come almost eight months after the promising talent tore his anterior cruciate ligament while preparing to be the club's first-choice halfback during the off-season.
"That's a real positive for young Drew," McGregor said.
"One, because of the work he's put into to get back to the back end of the year; and number two, obviously it gives us a bit more depth around the halves.
"It'll be interesting to see, I think Drew's due to play next week. He's done a lot of work, he's in good shape, he's had no complications along the way with his knee.
"It'd be nice to see him out there playing again."
McGregor also suggested the club was open to keeping the off-contract 22-year-old at the club next year as the likely back-up playmaker to Gareth Widdop and the incoming Ben Hunt.
Current halfback Josh McCrone is believed to be joining trans-Atlantic professional club Toronto Wolfpack, while the club also has youngster Jai Field as another halves option.
McGregor wanted to see Hutchison come back strongly given his extended lay-off.
"As far as I know he'd like to stay at the club and we'd like him to stay at the club," he said.
"It's just a matter now of getting out there and playing some footy and having confidence in himself after such a serious injury."
The Dragons are eighth on the Intrust Super Premiership ladder.
