Advising Titans a waste of time: Bennett
Aug 23, 2017 - 3:25 AM Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett says it is a waste of time offering advice to embattled NRL rivals Gold Coast because "they don't listen anyway."The Titans endured another tumultuous week after sacking coach Neil Henry amid reports of a rift with star player Jarryd Hayne and other issues.
At first Bennett was keen to stay out of the Titans turmoil.
"It's their problem, not mine," he said.
But when asked what insight his 40-year coaching career could offer the besieged Titans, he responded: "They don't listen anyway so you are wasting your time."
Bennett didn't hold back on the Gold Coast's AFL club either with the outspoken Broncos mentor describing how other franchises, including the Suns, had struggled on the tourist strip.
"It's obviously a difficult place down there, the Suns have struggled down there, basketball and soccer have struggled," said Bennett, in the presence of interim Suns coach Dean Solomon who visited training with two of his players on Wednesday.
"It would suggest it is not an easy place to have a franchise."
But Bennett believed the NRL should persist with a club on the tourist strip despite earlier incarnations - the Giants, the Seagulls and Chargers - all crashing and burning.
"They have a 16-team comp, that's what they get all the money for ... but there is no reason why they shouldn't persist with it although they may need a bit of help," he said.
Queensland coach Kevin Walters is the favourite to replace Henry at the Titans.
Asked what was the key to getting the right coach at the embattled Titans, Bennett said: "That's up to them.
"They made the decision to let Neil go so they have obviously got something in mind - ask them."
