Anthony Tupou announces NRL retirement
Sep 1, 2017 - 12:15 AM Former Australia rugby league back-rower Anthony Tupou has announced his retirement after failing to overcome a hip injury he suffered in round 10 playing for Newcastle.Tupou, 34, was a Newcastle junior before making his NRL debut in 2004 for Sydney Roosters.
The 11-Test Kangaroo played 111 games for the Roosters before moving to Cronulla in 2009, where he played 125 games.
"I am very grateful for the experiences rugby league has given to my family and I," he said.
The ball-playing back-rower played four State of Origin matches for NSW before spending a season in England with Wakefield Trinity.
He returned to the Knights in 2017, making his club NRL debut in round five.
"When I got the call to confirm I'd be playing at the Knights this year, it was a special moment not just for me, but for my whole family," he said.
Tupou played four games for Newcastle before the hip injury ruled him out indefinitely.
"I knew something was wrong as soon as it happened," he said.
"It has been tough to come to terms with retiring because I wanted to play at least one more year, but I also know I have been lucky to stay in this great game for so long."
