Dusty could have been NRL star: Chambers
Sep 18, 2017 - 1:04 AM He's widely rated the best player in the AFL but Dustin Martin could also be a huge hit in the NRL, according to Melbourne centre Will Chambers.Martin recently signed a seven-year multi-million deal to stay with Richmond after being courted by AFL rivals, but Chambers says he could even have made a successful transition to rugby league, having all the necessary attributes.
"He (Martin) is a pretty special player, he's a class act and a real talent," Chambers said.
"He's a big, strong kid and can run as well and he doesn't mind going in for the hard ball."
Chambers, who himself has a formidable fend, said Martin had well and truly nailed that move common to both codes.
"Everyone knows the fend is coming but trying to stop it is another thing."
Despite having a Kiwi dad, Martin never played rugby league or rugby union, taking up AFL as a youngster in country Victoria.
Chambers and the Storm will host Brisbane in their NRL preliminary final on Friday night before Martin's Tigers take on Greater Western Sydney at the MCG on Saturday night.
