Cowboys fans set to raid Sydney territory

Sep 19, 2017 - 5:33 PM North Queensland's rabid fanbase it set to raid Sydney territory as the club closes in on finalising a chartered flight full of Cowboys faithful for the preliminary NRL final.

With Brisbane meeting Melbourne in the other final, the Cowboys could ensure a grand final devoid of Sydney teams should they defeat the Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium on Saturday.

The Townsville-based club said that they are close to booking a 100-seat plane full of Cowboys fans, many of whom welcomed the team home after last week's semi-final win.

"We saw that the scenes at the airport last weekend when we got back - there's a strong connection with the community," coach Paul Green said.

"So as much support as we can get down there would be great to hear our fans cheer for us down there. It'd be fantastic."

The club failed to gather enough numbers to charter flights to Sydney for their first two finals games in Sydney but are confident of filling up the spots by Wednesday night.

The Cowboys filled six planes for their famous 2015 grand final triumph against Brisbane, and are again making plans for another shot at the premiership.

"I've been involved with the charter since 2014, and every finals series we've had, we've successfully been able to get a charter plane," said Cowboys corporate manager Dean Payne.

"Week one and week two this year was the first time we haven't.

"It's our sixth tour that we've done since 2014. In grand final week in 2015, we actually got six aircraft off the ground across three different airlines to make sure it could happen.

"You want to be very careful. The last thing you want to be doing, as coach Green would say, is (say) we're thinking about next week.

"But certainly we need to be a little bit organised and planned and put into place if there is to be a next week, which we really hope there is."
