Hurricanes edge spirited Stormers
May 5, 2017 - 9:52 AM The Hurricanes have emerged triumphant from a helter-skelter Super Rugby clash with the Stormers after a pair of Ngani Laumape second-half tries handed the side a 41-22 win.Well below their best for much of the match, the defending Super champions were hit by a flurry of SP Marais penalty goals to level the scores at 22-22 with just under half an hour remaining.
Plenty of pushing and shoving ensued as each side vied for the upper hand, until Laumape crashed over on the right to put his side back in front.
A second Laumape effort followed off the back of a Julian Savea breakaway, before Beauden Barrett pinched a bonus point with a last-second try.
"They did a very good job playing the game they wanted to play, and they frustrated us a little bit," Canes skipper TJ Perenara said.
After conceding an early penalty goal, the Hurricanes drew first blood when veteran winger Cory Jane claimed a cross-field Barrett chip-kick to stroll over.
A second Canes try followed in stunning circumstances from the younger Barrett, fullback Jordie, in the 16th minute.
The All Blacks apprentice stole a grubber kick from the hands of his Stormers opponent in-goal, before planting the ball down within inches of the boundary.
An equally brilliant third try followed seven minutes on, as a Jordie Barrett flick pass found Savea, who pushed his way over the line.
The Stormers hit back via Ramone Samuels, but were struggling to nullify the Canes' kicking game and conceded again when a second Beauden Barrett cross-field kick found Jordie for the simplest of 34th-minute tries.
At this point it appeared the Stormers would suffer their third successive throttling on Kiwi soil, but the Cape Town-based outfit rallied.
A pair of penalty goals, on the back of excellent work at the scrum and lineout, sent them into the break 22-16 behind, before another pair levelled proceedings.
The Canes looked well off their best at the start of the second half, as the Stormers' physical presence began to translate into dominance.
Yet Laumape's close-range effort settled nerves, before his breakaway effort settled the result and Barrett's late try rubbed salt in the Stormers' wounds.
