Portland holds off FC Dallas, 3-2

Apr 18, 2011 - 12:13 AM Portland, OR (Sports Network) - Rodney Wallace and Kenny Cooper scored their second goals of the year as Portland built a three-goal lead and Jake Gleeson pushed a last-second blast from MVP David Ferreira off the bar as the Timbers held on for a 3-2 win Sunday over FC Dallas at Jeld-Wen Field.

The expansion Timbers were winless in their first three games on the road, but followed Thursday's 4-2 win over the Chicago Fire with another impressive home win to extend their unbeaten streak to three games in Major League Soccer.

Portland (2-2-1) had lost its first two matches before drawing the New England Revolution on April 2. An own goal accounted for the Timbers' other goal.

FC Dallas (1-3-1) won its first match of the season last week, 3-0 against the Colorado Rapids in a rematch of last season's MLS Cup final, but lost for the third time in five matches. Ferreira and Brek Shea scored after the 83rd.

Portland took the lead inside 15 minutes when Jack Jewsbury's shot bounced off the left post, off the back of Dallas goalie Kevin Hartman and into the goal.

Cooper doubled the lead in the 35th minute when he headed a Jewsbury corner in from six yards past Hartman to the far post, and Wallace - who scored for the first time since 2009 earlier this week - added the game-winner after half.

Kalif Alhassan set up the goal by dribbling through five Dallas defenders, and after the ball squirted into space, Wallace hammered a left-footed shot to the near post from 14 yards in the 55th.

Ferreira pulled a goal back with seven minutes left in normal time when he got to a pass from Shea deep inside the area and directed the ball inside the near post.

Shea followed three minutes later by sending a pass from Ferreira into the net past Gleeson, who followed with the huge save deep in stoppage time.

Ferreira settled the ball on the right side of the area and unleashed a rocket to the near post that Gleeson just got his fingertips on to push off the bar.

Portland visits the Los Angeles Galaxy for its next match on April 23, when FC Dallas also plays its next match at Vancouver Whitecaps FC.
