L.A. brings an end to Colorado's unbeaten run

Jun 19, 2011 - 3:12 AM Commerce City, CO (Sports Network) - The Los Angeles Galaxy continued its good run of form on Saturday at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, handing the Colorado Rapids a 3-1 defeat that ends the club's longest ever unbeaten run at nine games.

Colorado (5-4-7) was very unlucky to fall behind in the 25th minute when L.A.'s Chris Birchall tracked down the ball near the end line and pulled it back toward the front of goal. Rapids defender Drew Moor lunged to block the cross, but he instead redirected it into his own net.

There was nothing fortunate at all about the Galaxy's second goal, which arrived three minutes prior to halftime, as Juninho collected the ball 25 yards from the net and placed it perfectly inside the upper far corner of the goal, leaving Colorado goalkeeper Matt Pickens with no chance.

But the hosts came out strong in the second half with substitute Omar Cummings providing a spark off the bench.

Cummings made his presence felt in the 64th minute as the Rapids pulled to within a goal when he cut into the penalty area on the left and beat goalkeeper Josh Saunders with a shot that crashed off the near post. However, the ball fell kindly into the path of Conor Casey for an easy tap in.

With 15 minutes to play, Colorado's momentum came to a stop when Caleb Folan received a straight red card for a poor tackle on Juninho.

L.A. (9-2-7) then took advantage five minutes later when Todd Dunivant carried ball down the left wing and squared it to an open Chad Barrett inside the penalty area for a first-time finish.

The Galaxy has now won five of its last seven games and extends its own unbeaten run to nine matches.
