Chivas doubles up on San Jose

Jul 7, 2011 - 4:43 AM Carson, CA (Sports Network) - Chivas USA used a strong second half to claim a 2-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday at The Home Depot Center.

The two sides failed to produce much excitement in the first half, but second- half goals from Ben Zemanski and Nick LaBrocca helped the Goats snap a four- game winless streak.

Justin Braun missed an early chance after 10 minutes for Chivas when he headed a cross over the net from six yards, while San Jose could have moved in front in the opening minutes of the second half, but Brad Ring's shot from inside the area whistled past the right post.

The game got a much-needed shot in the arm with just over 25 minutes to play when Zemanski received a pass from Braun 30 yards from goal, took a touch, and unleashed a rocket past goalkeeper Jon Busch.

San Jose was creating little in attack, but it wasn't until the 84th minute that the win was secure as substitute Francisco Mendoza threaded a nice ball to LaBrocca at the top of the box, allowing him to slot his shot past Busch.

The Earthquakes have earned only two points from their last four games and will host the Philadelphia Union on Saturday, while Chivas tries to build on this result when the club visits a hot Sporting Kansas City team this weekend.
