'Caps snap six-game winless run with win over Fire
Aug 8, 2011 - 1:06 AM Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Vancouver Whitecaps FC earned an emphatic home win Sunday to halt its six-game winless streak, defeating the struggling Chicago Fire 4-2 at Empire Field.Goals from Dominic Oduro and Orr Barouch were not enough get a result for the Fire, as an Eric Hassli brace, with additional contributions from Gershon Koffie and Camilo, handed the Whitecaps all three points.
Hassli opened the scoring in the first minute of the match, taking advantage of a defensive miscue to record his ninth goal of the season.
Oduro equalized for Chicago in the 23rd minute, getting on the end of through ball and roofing a shot past Whitecaps goalkeeper Jay Nolly.
Vancouver immediately responded, going ahead for a second time after Koffie ripped a shot from distance that found its way past a diving Sean Johnson.
Hassli has a chance to add to Vancouver's lead just before halftime, as a penalty was awarded when Yamith Cuesta brought down Camilo in the box. The ensuing kick was saved by Johnson to prevent a further deficit going into the break.
But Vancouver found its third goal just three minutes after the restart, as Camilo slid a shot under Johnson after a brilliant individual dribbling display.
Hassli added a fourth in the 72nd minute following a scramble in the box. A shot from Koffie hit the post, but Hassli was tucked home the rebound for his 10th goal of the season.
Barouch tallied a consolation goal in the 80th minute, finding space on the right side of the box before placing a low shot past Nolly.
Both teams remain bottom of their respective conferences, as the Whitecaps (3-11-9) sit in last in the West with 18 points, while the Fire (2-7-13) remain bottom in the East with 19 points.
Chicago returns to MLS action on August 13th with a road match against Red Bull New York, while Vancouver will travel to RFK Stadium to face DC United the same day.
