Real edges Sporting for fourth straight win

Sep 18, 2011 - 3:22 AM Sandy, UT (Sports Network) - Real Salt Lake is regaining top form at the right time.

Nat Borchers scored in the 54th minute and RSL, which advanced to the CONCACAF Champions League final earlier this season, downed Sporting Kansas City 1-0 at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday for its fourth straight Major League Soccer win.

Real (14-7-6) started the season on a four-game win streak, but a few bad runs in the season left some doubt abut the club this season, but since losing four of five from late July to mid-August, Jason Kreis' club has been unbeatable.

RSL has also downed the Philadelphia Union and Seattle Sounders FC - two more teams likely to qualify for the playoffs - during the run, and visits Red Bull New York on Wednesday. Real is third in the West, but has two games in hand.

Sporting (10-9-10) remained second in the East despite the defeat, but the top eight clubs in the conference are now separated by just 11 points.

After a scoreless first half, RSL grabbed the lone goal of the game 10 minutes into the second half. Kyle Beckerman played a free kick into the right side of the box, and Borchers met the ball in traffic to head inside the left post.

Borchers' third goal of the season was enough for RSL, as Nick Rimando posted his 12th shutout of the year his club's 13th.

Sporting will try to rebound Friday at Philadelphia in a huge East clash.
