Torres tallies lone goal as Union top Red Bulls

Apr 10, 2011 - 1:13 AM Chester, PA (Sports Network) - Substitute Roger Torres scored with his first touch of the game in the 68th minute on Saturday as the Philadelphia Union handed Red Bull New York a 1-0 defeat at PPL Park.

Torres entered the match in the 67th minute for Carlos Ruiz, and after New York (1-1-2) defender Tim Ream's failed clearance went straight to Danny Mwanga, he laid the ball off for Torres inside the penalty area for a first- time finish.

Philadelphia (3-1-0) has now won three of its first four games, although the team didn't create too many chances over the course of 90 minutes and was fortunate to escape the first half without conceding a goal.

Red Bull striker Juan Agudelo had two chances to put his team ahead in the opening 30 minutes, but he was denied by the woodwork on both occasions.

The first came in the 21st minute when his deflected effort from the top of the penalty area struck the left post, while he took down a long ball from Joel Lindpere on the half-hour mark and dribbled into the area before firing a shot off the crossbar.

Philadelphia returns to action next Saturday when the club hosts Seattle Sounders FC, while New York tries to bounce back from its first defeat this season against San Jose at Red Bull Arena.
