N.Y. edges New England for first win since April

Jun 11, 2011 - 3:03 AM Harrison, NJ (Sports Network) - Red Bull New York needed everything to fall into place Friday night to snap its six-game winless streak.

Thierry Henry scored his seventh goal of the year, Greg Sutton saved a penalty kick, and Red Bull New York was the beneficiary of an own goal, as it beat the New England Revolution, 2-1, at Red Bull Arena for its first win since April.

New York (5-2-7) moved into first place in the Eastern Conference, and holds a one-point advantage over the Philadelphia Union, who host Real Salt Lake on Saturday.

New England (3-7-4) lost its fourth straight match, and is just 1-5-1 over its last seven Major League Soccer games.

The Revolution wasted a chance to take the lead just after the half-hour mark, as Shalrie Joseph failed to convert from the penalty spot. After Stephen Keel fouled Rajko Lekic in the area, Joseph stepped up and drove the penalty to the right.

Sutton initially took a step the other way, but dove back to the left post and made the save to keep the match scoreless in the 34th minute.

Three minutes later, New York took the lead when Henry sent a pass in from the right that New England's Ryan Cochrane turned into his own net from just a few yards out.

Henry then doubled the lead five minutes after halftime, as he ran onto a long pass down the left, opened space against Cochrane and fired inside the right post for his seventh goal in his last nine matches.

Zak Boggs pulled a goal back in the 54th minute, as he settled a cross from Chris Tierney with his thigh, then hit a half-volley into the middle of the net for his first goal of the season for New England.

Kenny Mansally slipped a shot just wide of the right post in the 72nd as New England nearly equalized, leaving manager Steve Nicol with his hands covering his head on the sideline.

Lekic then appeared to find the tying goal with three minutes remaining, but the score was correctly called back for offside, and New York held on for the win despite a long spell of strong play from New England.

New England returns home to host Toronto FC on Wednesday. New York visits the expansion Portland Timbers on June 19.
