New York routed by Colorado

Jul 21, 2011 - 3:39 AM Commerce City, CO (Sports Network) - Red Bull New York suffered a humbling defeat at Dick's Sporting Goods Park Wednesday night, falling to the Colorado Rapids 4-1 behind a Sanna Nyassi hat trick.

Colorado jumped out to an early lead in the second minute when Nyassi found himself one-on-one with Frank Rost and quickly slipped a shot past the New York keeper that hit the post and crossed the goal line.

The Rapids doubled their lead in the 26th minute when Nyassi's long range effort struck the frame of the goal and bounced back into play. Midfielder Wells Thompson followed up the shot and converted the rebound.

Colorado's third of the match came five minutes later from a fine solo effort. Nyassi used his strength and speed to make his way into the Red Bulls penalty area and fire a shot past Rost.

The Red Bulls failed to regroup at halftime, and Nyassi continued to tear the defense apart.

Nyassi claimed his hat trick in the 61st minute with another long run through the New York center back pairing of Carlos Mendes and Tim Ream. Nyassi accelerated past the duo with ease and slipped a shot under Rost to give the Rapids a 4-0 lead.

Thierry Henry pulled back a consolation goal for New York in the 67th minute. Henry demonstrated his vast experience in choosing placement over power to slot a low cross into the far lower corner of the goal.

Despite boasting one of the most impressive lineups the league has ever seen, the Red Bulls continue their disappointing play, losing two of their last three matches. They have only managed two wins from their last 15 regular season matches.

New York thought it had resolved its defensive woes by signing designated player Rost, but the veteran keeper was unable to build upon his shutout debut, conceding four goals to the Rapids.

The Red Bulls will look to gain some composure ahead of their home match on Saturday against FC Dallas, while the Rapids will hope for a similar performance from Nyassi in their home match against the New England Revolution.
