RSL edges TFC to remain top
Jun 29, 2013 - 7:11 PM Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Real Salt Lake solidified its place at the top of the MLS table for another week as it claimed a 1-0 victory over Toronto FC at BMO Field on Saturday. The Claret and Cobalt came into the contest tied with the Portland Timbers atop the Western Conference table with an MLS-high 30 points for the season.
But with Portland enjoying a bye week, Yordany Alvarez's lone goal against Toronto ensured Real Salt Lake's position at the summit of the Supporters' Shield table as it improved to 33 points this term.
After trading blows throughout the opening period, it appeared as though the two sides would head into the halftime break even in a scoreless stalemate, but Alvarez broke the deadlock in the 45th minute with a cracking strike to open his MLS scoring account.
Tony Beltran exploited space on the right side of the box and centered a pass for Olmes Garcia. The RSL striker settled the pass and laid it off for Alvarez to hammer a first-time effort just inside the far post from outside the penalty area.
The two sides were forced to play the remaining 11 minutes of the match with 10 men after Beltran and Doneil Henry were issued red cards for their involvement in a small fracas.
Toronto used the extra space to its advantage as the Reds peppered Nick Rimando with a flurry of shots in dying stages, but the Real Salt Lake 'keeper was equal to the task as he preserved the clean sheet to give the Claret and Cobalt their first league win in Canada.
Real Salt Lake (10-5-3) is unbeaten in last six league contests, going 5-0-1 over that stretch and winning its last four matches.
Toronto FC (2-9-6) sees its three-game unbeaten run come to an end as the club remains on 12 points for the season.
