'Quakes, Rapids finish scoreless at Buck Shaw

May 8, 2014 - 4:36 AM Santa Clara, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Colorado Rapids and San Jose Earthquakes battled to a scoreless draw on Wednesday at Buck Shaw Stadium.

Coming off a 3-2 loss to Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place last weekend, San Jose was desperate to give its season the kick start it desperately needs.

The home side had the better of the play in the first half and the first quality chance fell to Alan Gordon in the opening 15 minutes as he galloped in behind the Colorado defense, but sliced his strike wide of the far post.

The 'Quakes created another fantastic opportunity on the half-hour mark as Chris Wondolowski got a clean header on goal from inside the area, but Colorado goalkeeper Clint Irwin parried it away with a diving save.

Colorado sat a little further deep inside its half of the field and had only 44 percent of possession. The visitors finished with four strikes on target, but never really troubled San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch.

San Jose continued to push for the winner on home turf and had one final opportunity as the clock approached stoppage time when Wondolowski worked his way into the penalty area and had a strike, but the ball smacked off the far post and stayed out as the clubs settled for a point apiece.
