RSL leave it late to drop Fire, remain unbeaten

May 4, 2014 - 2:48 AM Bridgeview, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Alvaro Saborio and Joao Plata struck in stoppage time for Real Salt Lake to steal a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Fire on Saturday at Toyota Park.

Chicago got off to a quick start on Saturday as reigning league MVP Mike Magee opened the scoring for the hosts in the 22nd minute when he raced onto a rebound left by RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando and smashed it into the roof of the net for the early lead.

The Fire doubled their lead eight minutes later when Juan Luis Anangono fired past Rimando for a shock two-goal lead at the intermission.

As the clock approached the final 20 minutes it appeared Chicago would come away with its first win of the season, but the defending Western Conference champs pulled one back in the 72nd minute as Javier Morales threaded one through to Plata who beat Chicago goalkeeper Sean Johnson.

The Fire held the lead into second-half stoppage time, but it all collapsed after the clock hit 90 minutes. RSL drew level when Abdoulie Mansally got free down the left wing and chipped it into the box for Saborio to tap home.

Just moments later, the visitors claimed the winner on a similar play as Saborio played provider, lofting the ball to the back post for an unmarked Plata to tap home to complete his double and hand RSL the points in dramatic fashion.

The result sees RSL improve to 17 points on the season and remain unbeaten through nine games, while the Fire continue to search for their first win, with two defeats and six draws through eight games.
