'Quakes sneak past FC Dallas
May 11, 2014 - 4:38 AM Santa Clara, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - A David Texeira own goal proved to be the difference on Saturday as the 10-man San Jose Earthquakes hung on for a nervy 2-1 victory over FC Dallas at Buck Shaw Stadium. The hosts opened the scoring on 25 minutes when a long ball forward was flicked on by Clarence Goodson into the path of an on-rushing Cordell Cato, who slid it between the legs of FCD goalkeeper Raul Fernandez.
San Jose went down to 10 men on the stroke of halftime when Shea Salinas was shown a straight red card by referee Chris Penso for a studs-up tackle into the knee of FCD defender Matt Hedges.
Despite playing the entire second half with 10 men, San Jose found a second goal in the 73rd minute as a long ball into the penalty area hit off the back of Texeira and rolled in behind Fernandez for the own goal.
Three minutes later, however, Michel brought FC Dallas back into the match when he unleashed a thunderbolt free kick off the underside of the crossbar and in from the edge of the penalty area.
FC Dallas were handed a bit of a lifeline late on as the fourth official's board showed six minutes of stoppage time and the visitors forced 'Quakes goalkeeper Jon Busch to make several saves. But the equalizer never came and San Jose snuck away with an important three points.
The result sees San Jose improve to 10 points from nine matches, while FC Dallas remains on 16 points from 11 matches.
