Sporting, RBNY finish level at Sporting Park
May 28, 2014 - 2:01 AM Kansas City, KS (SportsNetwork.com) - Antonio Dovale and Bradley Wright- Phillips exchanged tallies on Tuesday as Red Bull New York and Sporting Kansas City played to a 1-1 draw at Sporting Park.Sporting entered the match hoping to snap a three-match winless run, and despite missing defender Matt Besler and midfielders Graham Zusi and Lawrence Olum to national team duty, the hosts had the better of the play early on.
Sporting had an excellent chance in the first minute of the game when Igor Juliao galloped down the right flank and fired a ball on frame that had to be hastily cleared off the line by the New York defense.
Minutes later, midfielder Benny Feilhaber smashed the crossbar with a well- struck free kick and the early pressure paid off in the ninth minute when Sporting finally found the back of the net.
The opening goal came in the ninth minute when Dovale cut inside on the edge of the penalty area and unleashed a left-footed, curling strike into the bottom left corner, just past the outstretched arm of New York goalkeeper Luis Robles.
New York grabbed the equalizer five minutes into the second half when Thierry Henry threaded an inch-perfect through ball to the feet of Wright-Phillips, who swept it past Sporting goalkeeper Eric Kronberg for his league-leading 11th tally of the season.
New York continued to heap pressure on the Sporting defense following the goal and forced Kronberg to make several quality saves to keep his team from falling behind.
Sporting created a few scoring chances in the final minutes as the fourth official's board showed five minutes of stoppage time, but the clubs were forced to settle for a point apiece.
The result sees Sporting improve to 19 points on the season, while the Red Bulls improve to 15 points.
