Sounders sneak past United at RFK

Jun 29, 2014 - 1:07 AM Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - The Seattle Sounders returned to MLS action on Saturday with a 1-0 win over D.C. United at RFK Stadium, giving the Western Conference leaders their third consecutive victory.

Chad Barrett netted the only goal of the match in the 39th minute with a thunderous header, while United failed to build on a comfortable win over the Montreal Impact before the World Cup recess.

The hosts had the better of the play early and created some quality scoring chances through Luis Silva and Chris Rolfe, who ripped one off the post in the 24th minute.

Despite the chances, it was the visiting side that found the breakthrough six minutes before the intermission when Gonzalo Pineda lofted a well-placed cross into the area where Barrett rose highest and powered a header into the roof of the net, leaving United goalkeeper Bill Hamid with no chance for a save.

After the break, United continued to push for an equalizer, but the finishing was off most of the night and several chances were squandered.

Seattle earns its 11th win of the season and improves to a league-best 35 points, while D.C. United remains atop the East with 25 points.
