Henry stars as RBNY cruises past Columbus
Jul 13, 2014 - 1:17 AM Harrison, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Thierry Henry scored a goal and added three assists at Red Bull Arena on Saturday to lead Red Bull New York to a 4-1 defeat of the Columbus Crew. The opener came in the 17th minute when the Frenchman latched on to Eric Alexander's brilliant through ball and squared it for Bradley Wright-Phillips to tuck home his sixth goal in as many games.
The Crew answered in the 39th minute when Adam Bedell collected a bouncing ball from Ethan Finlay and fired a first-time effort past Luis Robles for his first career MLS goal.
But the Red Bulls managed to regain the lead before the close of the opening period as a rebound from a Wright-Phillips shot fell to Henry and the Frenchman guided his nonchalant attempt into the upper corner.
Henry helped New York seal the victory in the 56th minute when he picked out Lloyd Sam with a square pass, allowing the Englishman to slot a shot past Steve Clark for his second goal of the campaign.
Columbus was reduced to 10 men in the 85th minute when Bernardo Anor was issued a second caution for kicking the ball into Chris Duvall after a challenge.
New York took advantage of the extra man by tacking on a late goal, and it was Henry at the helm once again as he provided the assist for Alexander's second goal of the season.
The win sees New York (5-5-8) improve to 23 points while extending its unbeaten run to five games.
Columbus (4-6-8) sees its run of four successive draws come to an end as the club remains on 20 points.
